The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has approved 50 solar parks with a total capacity of nearly 37.5 gigawatts, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi announced on Monday in New Delhi.
While addressing the 7th General Assembly of the International Solar Alliance, the minister outlined India’s ambitious renewable energy targets, which included identifying potential offshore wind energy sites to reach 30 GW capacity by 2030.
“We have approved 50 solar parks with a total capacity of nearly 37.5 GW and identified potential offshore wind energy sites to reach our 30 GW goal by 2030,” the minister said.
He added that India reached an impressive 90 GW of installed solar capacity, moving steadily toward its broader goal of 500 GW renewable energy capacity by 2030.
India is also setting its sights on new horizons, with a target to produce 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030, supported by 125 GW of renewable energy capacity, the minister said.
“I am proud to say that we are making a tangible impact on the ground. This commitment to progress aligns seamlessly with the goals of the International Solar Alliance,” said Joshi.
The ISA, a coalition of 120 member countries, has successfully completed 21 out of 27 demonstration projects, showcasing its effectiveness in mobilizing resources and advancing solar energy initiatives globally, particularly in developing nations.
A flagship initiative of ISA is the establishment of the Global Solar Facility. This facility aims to unlock commercial capital for solar projects in underserved regions, especially Africa.
With a pilot project already underway in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and commitments of $39 million from India, ISA is on track to operationalize this initiative by the UN Climate Change Conference to be held from Nov. 11-22 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
