The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) stands at the forefront of Dubai City’s ambitious strides toward environmental stewardship and innovation.
“We are proud of DEWA’s contribution to reducing net carbon dioxide emissions in the Emirate of Dubai by 19% in 2022 as compared to 2010. This mitigation also supports objectives of the Carbon Abatement Strategy to reduce carbon emissions by 30% by 2030,” says Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA.
Sustainable Energy Infrastructure
Central to DEWA’s strategy is the massive Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the world’s largest single-site solar park, which underscores Dubai’s clean energy drive. To produce 100% of its energy from clean sources by 2050, the park is a cornerstone in achieving the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050. This initiative alone has contributed significantly to reducing Dubai’s carbon emissions, with a remarkable 19% reduction reported in 2022 compared to 2010 levels.
DEWA contributes to sustainable urban infrastructure with projects like Shams Dubai, which encourages the installation of solar panels on rooftops to increase the share of solar power in the energy mix. Enhancing the use of renewable energy sources, they have made a significant step with the Hydroelectric Power Plant in Hatta.
As per the UAE Circular Economy Policy DEWA has adopted the circular economy model which emphasizes renewable energy, energy and water efficiency, and sustainable asset management. This approach enhances resource efficiency and supports broader environmental and economic goals.
Community engagement is another pillar of DEWA’s strategy. Through environmental awareness campaigns and collaboration with groups such as the Emirates Marine Environmental Group, DEWA actively promotes biodiversity and sustainability practices. Initiatives such as beach clean-ups and mangrove plantings are pivotal in preserving local marine ecosystems.
Aligned with the broader vision of a sustainable Dubai, initiatives such as the Dubai Sustainable Tourism initiative, DEWA promotes sustainable transportation, with projects like the expansion of electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

Innovation is embedded in DEWA’s operations, highlighted by its cutting-edge projects like the Green Charger initiative for electric vehicles and the DEWA Innovation Centre at the Solar Park.
